Haptic to visual cross-modal recognition of objects in the vervet monkey.

چکیده
Five juvenile vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were tested using the Cowey and Weiskrantz technique. The animals had access in the dark to distasteful biscuits of one shape and tasteful biscuits of another shape. Later they were shown a pair of biscuits, one of each shape, and the animals first selection was scored. A single pair of shapes was used with flavor assigned daily according to a Gellerman schedule. In 69 percent of trials the monkeys selected the tasteful shape (P less than 0.001). The performance in the second half of testing was higher than in the beginning which suggests that some kind of learning set develops.

Children's haptic and cross-modal recognition with familiar and unfamiliar objects.
Five-year-old children explored multidimensional objects either haptically or visually and then were tested for recognition with target and distractor items in either the same or the alternative modality. In Experiments 1 and 2, haptic, visual, and cross-modal recognition were all nearly with familiar objects; haptic and visual recognition were also excellent with unfamiliar objects, but cross-...
متن کاملA comparison of the effects of depth rotation on visual and haptic three-dimensional object recognition.
A sequential matching task was used to compare how the difficulty of shape discrimination influences the achievement of object constancy for depth rotations across haptic and visual object recognition. Stimuli were nameable, 3-dimensional plastic models of familiar objects (e.g., bed, chair) and morphs midway between these endpoint shapes (e.g., a bed-chair morph). The 2 objects presented on a ...
متن کاملCross-Modal Object Recognition Is Viewpoint-Independent
BACKGROUND Previous research suggests that visual and haptic object recognition are viewpoint-dependent both within- and cross-modally. However, this conclusion may not be generally valid as it was reached using objects oriented along their extended y-axis, resulting in differential surface processing in vision and touch. In the present study, we removed this differential by presenting objects ...
متن کاملCross-Modal Scene Perception
We report the effect of cross modal performance on the recognition of familiar objects arranged in a scene. In two separate experiments, participants had to learn the position of objects in a scene either by viewing the objects (visual learning) or by feeling the objects (haptic learning). After learning, the experimenter swapped two of seven object positions and the participant's recognition m...
متن کاملYersinia enterocolitica Infection in a Vervet Monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) in Iran
A vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) housed at quarantine of Razi vaccine and serum research institute died following a few days of sickness. Multiple abscesses on the surface and inside the liver and enlargement of spleen with pinpoint white spot were the most prominent macroscopic features. We examined the organs of the dead monkey and Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated. In histopatho...
